Physics is concerned with a study of the fundamental principles that govern the
material world. It seeks to observe it, to measure it, and to describe it. The
description covers its structure and its motion, past present and future. In
physics, students begin with a study of the laws that govern the motion of
particles. By the end of the lower division sequence, we will have covered all
the essential concepts of classical physics and given students an introduction
to topics in modern physics such as quantum mechanics, relativity, and atomic
and nuclear physics.
The principles of physics form a foundation on which the other natural sciences
build. The role of the physics program at CSUSM is thus to provide
instructional support to the degree programs in disciplines such as Biology,
Chemistry, Computer Science, and Mathematics. Our courses are also suitable
for students preparing for a career in a branch Engineering or the Health
Sciences.
The Physics Department at CSUSM is committed to innovation in instruction and
the use of technology in teaching. Students will have many opportunities for
hands-on activities that build their understanding of the physical world and
their formal description of it.
Students intending to major in Chemistry, Computer Science, or Mathematics
should take the two semester sequence PHYS 201, 202. Those interested in
pursuing a career in the Biological or Health Sciences should begin with the
two semester sequence PHYS 205, 206.
A Bachelor's Degree in Applied Physics will be offered at CSUSM starting in
Fall 2007.
